Hi all!
I recent bought a Canonet 28 for my fiance and it turns out that the meter is not working quite right  . When the aperture ring is set to "A" (with a correct battery in of course!) the meter is pegged all the way to the top no matter what I point it at. I tried working the aperture ring/ASA selector with no joy. I tried alkaline and zinc-air batts to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of things I could try/why it's doing that!

Note: The shutter seems to be firing correctly and the diaphragm is snappy. The film transport is good too! Only one issue away from the perfect little cam! |

What happens when the aperture is set to anything else? It shouldn't make a difference to the meter needle but if it does, that might give a clue. What happens with no battery in it? The meter should go to the bottom of the scale, does it? |

The needle goes to the bottom when selecting an aperture manually and when the battery is removed. |

I just realized that I should include the following detail: The shutter locks on "A" which seems to indicate that the light is outside of the possible EV range (it does this in all lighting situations). |

Best guess I can come up with is there is a short which occurs when you switch to A. It's been a while since I worked on one but on the one I have here now, the meter doesn't change when switching from A to any manual aperture. I think the meter is always working but when selecting a manual aperture there is a mechanical override of the meter needle clamp so the meter has no effect.
It's normal that the shutter won't release if the meter needle goes beyond the normal range.
I think the problem is likely to be in the lens/shutter area. I seem to remember it's not that difficult to get into as long as you have a lens ring wrench. Go in from the front. |
