I have an olympus om2n and when I try to take a meter reading, the needle is erratic and bounces up and down. eventually it'll stay in one spot but it'll be completely inaccurate. and if i make any slight movement, the needle will start jumping up and down again. I've been searching the forum to see if anyone has had the same problem but to no avail. I'm new to DIY camera repair so hopefully fixing this won't be too technical. anyone have any idea what the deal is with this camera? battery connection problem perhaps or could the CdS cell ruined? advice is greatly appreciated! |

I had similar effects on an OM-2 - but this had no effect on correct exposure in auto mode. The OM-2 uses two SBC cells to measure the light reflected from the film *during exposure* (a clever idea indeed). What happens before and after exposure is unimportant. For the meter reading, additional CDS cells are mounted on the viewfinder prism. These are independent from the SBC cells. Of course, in manual mode the CDS reading is all you have - and if it is erratic you can't use it. Anyway, try to check if your camera does correct exposure on film in auto mode.
I'm not quite sure if the OM-2N too has both SBC and CDS cells. AFAIK the OM-2SP uses the same SBCs for both manual and auto exposure via a half-silvered mirror. You may look up the details at this wonderful OM site or on the Olympus Hardware Resource Page.
At this time, I'm quite content with having only auto mode working on that OM-2. But I own another one where even the auto mode sometimes goes *very* wrong. Maybe some day I will try to fix this... I'll report it here.
