I have a old (1937) Summar 50mm f2 lens that will fit onto my FED-2 but the lens is cloudy (perhaps with oil) so I would like to remove the front lens and clean it. Is it possible to unscrew the front facia ring with the lettering and remove the front element?

The complete front element assembly should just unscrew. Cloudiness very common on this lens. In most cases, it cleans off very easily.

As anybody who has actually used a Summar 50mm/f2 knows, the lens is capable of producing very special images - an old world charm perhaps. However Bill's ' cleans off very easily' gives the impression that a lens subjected to a DIY wash and dry will suddenly start producing said images, far from it. The glass is very soft, so blundering about will produce a 'cleaned' lens that performs worse than than when it was cloudy. If you really want to see what magic this old optic can produce, get it professionally repolished. The original optical formulation withstands this treatment very well.

Thanks for your replies. I shall have a go at unscrewing the facia ring after removing the locking grubscrew. I am aware that the glass is very soft so I will take great care when I clean it. At least I don't have to worry about damaging the coating!
