I am posting this again. Not sure what happened to the last post. On my computer it shows that there is only one reply being that of Brcamera, but then you open the thread and there is only my original post. Not sure what happened anyway here is my post again.
I have a problem with my Nikon FE. When I press the shutter release the mirror raises, but the shutter doesn’t open. This is the same for all speeds. When I turn the knob to the M90 mark the mirror immediately drops back down. If I fire the shutter starting out in the M90 mode the camera seems to function as normal. (The mirror swings up, shutter opens and closes and the mirror drops back down.)
After searching the forums the two obvious responses that I have found are “put new batteries in” and “a sticky gooey mirror damper foam”. Well my mirror damper is in perfect shape as it was just recently replaced, and I just put fresh batteries in and the battery ready light glows bright. The meter works perfectly as well.
One thing I noticed that might have something to do with it. Sometimes the shutter speed selector knob gets stuck on certain speeds almost the way it feels when it’s on the AUTO selection and you have to press the lockout button to move it. It’s almost like it’s catching on something. Press the button and apply a little force and it will turn again.
I just found a factory repair manual online and I plan to open her up this next week to give the camera a good cleaning and to see if I can find anything that looks out of place. I am just wondering if anyone know any area specifically that I should look at.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Normally I check the FRE assembly when the shutter hangs open on a FE Nikon but since your meter is working, that would rule out the FRE (the FRE is the round plastic ring that lives around the rewind bushing and inputs ASA values to the circuit). In your case, since you say there is some resistance in the shutter speed knob, I would suspect the shutter control unit has a problem. The shutter speed control unit houses the speed control knob and galvanometer assembly. When the top cover is off, you can remove the speed control unit with some de-soldering of wires and removing three screws visible on the top. It has been a while since I repaired the FE, but I don't believe the control unit was made to to repaired, just replaced if defective. Be careful removing it as the galvanometer needle on the bottom is easily damaged since it protrudes into the slot in the bottom of the viewfinder. |

Yes, that's what it was. Under the cap of the shutter speed knob, a couple of plastic stops had broken off and then were pushed around inside the unit severing wires and what not. Is there any source for a replacement Speed control unit or will I have to find a donor camera? |
