I have a few ERCs from classic cameras which are now 55-60 years old and for the most part are in excellent condition. The one spot that has me stumped are the edges that have been worn through use and age and essentially look like suede leather. I'm talking about edges which may be 1/8" wide running along an edge. I would like to treat these edges in a way to protect them from further deterioration and hopefully make them look better. Before I try anything I decided to ask if anyone has had actual experience, good or bad, which would help me decide what to do, if anything. Thanks |

You want a product that seals the edge. I have used shellac based varnish and even thin 'super glue' on really badly delaminated edges. Another possibility, which I use a lot when restoring leather book bindings, is a thin coat of molten bees wax. Apply with a fine stiff brush and when set, buff up the edge with a piece of fine canvas or course linen. |

Thanks, Glen. I had thought in terms of brown shoe polish, but I was afraid that it wouls rub off on clothing.Bees wax sounds like a good idea since it would not have any coloring and be more solid.I am going to give it a try. |

If you want to try match the color, you could use a melted Crayola (or other) crayon. |

Thanks, Greyscale, your suggestion would do a much better job in masking the problem. However, I plan to use the camera and ERC so that I may have a problem of the color rubbing off on my clothes as would shoe polish. I will try it along with the candle wax on an old useless ECR and see how it turns out. |
