When I was trying to de-click my 85mm f1.8 Nikkor lens I couldn't get one of the parts out that triggors the aperture so I remove this top plate on it which I soon realized held a ring in place that holds the ball bearings in. Anyway, long story short, all the ball bearings dropped once this part was removed. I collected what think is all the ball bearings including the ones that were stuck in the lens. Now the issue is how do I get the ball bearings back in this ring and re-assembly?! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know this was a stupid move on my part. |

No experience of the lens and with no picture it's difficult to help but, generally speaking, sticking the ball bearings into place on one of the parts with a small amount of grease usually makes assembly of such items easier. |

If these ball bearings serve the same function as those in the Canon FD 1.4 type mount mechanism - ie they support the function levers that interface lens to body - then they do not like grease, the mechanism is made to run dry. Search on line for the relevant repair manual, there will be one out there somewhere. |

Ouch! I took apart my first Nikon (pre-ai) lens a few weeks ago- and if you are talking about the bearings near the mount flange that the aperture return lever rides on, then you have a job ahead of you. I remember taking off the rear flange to get at the lens, as soon as I lifted that piece and saw all of the bearings I just thought "if these fall on the floor, I am throwing the lens away." I got lucky and the bearings stayed in place- but good luck with the re-assembly. ps- while using grease to hold bearings in place for re-assembly is usually a good idea, these bearings need to move quickly, and grease would prevent them from doing so. |
