I have been trying to figure out the problem with this camera, and I'm now stuck. When I first got the camera, it was completely stuck; after I opened it up, cleaned off the battery terminals and unstuck the shutter, it worked well. I put it together again, and the shutter was firing as it should at what seemed to be appropriate speeds. Then it suddenly started doing something goofy. At whatever shutter speed I set it, it will open the shutter for exactly 13 seconds and then close. It fires and opens the shutter every time, but it stays open for exactly 13 seconds. In addition, the light inside the viewfinder that usually indicates the suggested shutter speed is now not present. The battery tests out fine, and the shutter is firing, so obviously there is power getting into the camera electronics. Any ideas?? |

No, the shutter opens as soon as the button is pressed, but it stays in the open position for 13 seconds and then closes again. |

The Minolta X series generates the correct shutter delay by a RC circuit. Resistance and capacitance. The capacitor is normally a 220 micro farad and that is the part that fails. If your multi-meter has a capacitance check, use it on this capacitor. Micro Tools sells replacements |

I am having a similar problem with my xg-7. However, the manual shutter speed all work fine, but the meter does not work on the auto setting. If I press the shutter button in auto mode, the shutter opens for a varable length of time around 30 seconds. Could this be related to the capacitor as well, if not what are some other possibilities? |

For the XG-7, I would suspect the auto-manual changeover switch or the film speed resistor. They are both brushes and sometimes can be briefly brought back to life by moving them around repeatedly. If that works, you have found the problem and need to remove the top cover and give them a proper cleaning. |

Thanks for the help...I took the top off and discovered that the wipers for the film speed resistor actually came off their mounts. It took me some time to re-straighten them properly and remount them on the damaged plastic posts. But all seems to be working properly now. I had to use a little bit of super glue to hold the wiper on the posts - hopefully it will hold! |
