I have an OM-1 MD that exhibits a situation where maybe one time out of every five times I crank the film lever, the shutter won't fire afterward. It requires that I crank the film lever again, all the way to the end, where I can feel it move maybe another 1/16" or so. Then the shutter will trip. There's no consistency to this that I've been able to find. It doesn't matter whether I wind the lever slowly or fast, whether I make sure that I've rotated it all the way around or not. Sometimes the shutter won't fire, requiring that final bit of rotation before it will. I'm not sure at all where to begin with this. Hoping it might be something obvious and easy to fix, of course. Any ideas? Suggestions? |

I would start with a quick lubrication of the moving parts. Take the bottom plate off and watch the camera in action while doing this. |

That is a common fault with the OM-1 and is due to dirty or worn ratchet claws in the wind clutch. Flood cleaning with Ronsonol may help but be prepared to pull frame-counter/advance unit including the wind shaft which is retained IIRC by a LH screw in the base. The ratchet claws must move freely on their pivots, if the tips are worn you can try filing them. |

Thanks, guys. This camera is in very nice cosmetic condition. The film transport areas look new, so hopefully there is no excessive wear to the mechanism. Maybe I'll get lucky and a Ronsonol treatment will be sufficient. Thanks, Gez, about the LH screw tip. |
