A while back I bought an Exakta RTL 1000 as an attempt to downgrade/switch from medium format TLRs to 35mm SLRs (the waist level finder was what sold it for me). The exposures all seemed to be accurate, but I kept getting blank frames every so often; turns out the top speeds (1/1000 and 1/500) are capping completely almost all the time. I managed to "fix" the problem by exercising the shutter, firing it over and over again at 1/1000 until it no longer capped, but it soon went back to its old tricks. I guess it's pretty obvious a CLA is needed, but I'm wondering about the possibility of doing it myself; does anyone have any expertise with these shutters, and any advice as to what exactly would be required? It's the same as in the Praktica VLC, if that helps...? |

You may want to check Steve Shepherd's site on Repairing Praktica L-series. They have the same shutters as the RTL 1000. |

Thanks for the heads up, Prasanna. I'll take a look and figure out whether or not this is a DIY job or something I'd rather trust to a professional! |
