Hey, sorry, I'm new here. And to the whole camera scene, to be honest. So I'm just an all-around n00b. But I just fished out a Minolta Maxxum 5xi that hasn't been used since 1995. I figured, you know, maybe I'd fix it. The LCD Data screen reads "help", but I got it to get back to its normal readings. However, I just loaded some film into it, and as the manual suggests, it's a camera winding problem. I've no clue where to start from here. Anyone have any idea? |

Usually if you remove then reinsert the battery it will clear the "help" message (and the problem) but, if it does not, then it is more serious. If the manual says it may be a winding problem then it may be the little motor or, depending on whether it uses gears or a belt, a gear may have cracked or the belt is lax/snapped. Lesser possibilities are the electronics or a wire connection (ribbon cable). Basically, these cameras are selling used for so cheap it is not worth fixing by a shop. It is easier to find a working one. If you want to take a quick look, see if the bottom can be removed and see if it is a belt or gear problem. If it is a belt, that should be easy to replace. |

thanks so much! Weirdly, I've found it working by removing the battery and holding back in place until the wind registers. it seems to be working, despite displaying help every so often. it's just a pain, but again, it's not like I'm a serious photographer or anything. thanks again! i'll probably be checking the underbelly, anyhow. since i love to tinker haha. |

Also, this might be a stupid question, but can I use a Zykkor MC 135mm lens with this camera? |

You should be able to use the lens as long as it has the Minolta AF bayonet mount. Zykkor lenses are available in different mounts. So it's not the lens brand that matters but the mount type. If your lens has a different mount than your camera there might be an adapter. Rgds Martin |
