I just bought a lens I've been wanting for a loooong time. Ordered it from KEH for a good price because the zoom is loose. It should be here some time next week. In the mean time, I figured I'd go ahead and ask while I'm waiting for it. I've tightened up loose zooms before -- seems like every one is different, though. So, just wondering if anybody here has tightened up this zoom's ring before. I'm thinking I'll start by pulling the rubber sleeve back and see what's under there. Hopefully I'll find a loose screw or three and that'll be all there is to it. The sales guy at KEH said that the zoom ring was loose, but not excessively so. He said that if the looseness was excessive, they wouldn't have bought it. So this looseness may actually be something I can put up with. Chances are it probably isn't as loose as the zoom ring on my Nikkor 80-200 f/4.5, which is notorious for having a loose zoom ring, and mine's one of 'em. The Nikkor still takes great photos, even with its very loose zoom ring. |

Well, I thought I should maybe put a cap on this topic -- even though nobody's responded. The lens arrived today and I gotta tell ya, those guys at KEH are very conservative in their descriptions. I've owned a lot of zooms that had collars a lot looser than this lens's. It is just barely what I would call "loose." So no need to tear into it. Oh, and for being a KEH-rated BGN lens, it is actually in excellent condition. I'm stoked. |
