Hi, all -

Picked up a Retina IIc in great shape, but the shutter doesn't cock. Opened it up, and the gear to turn the cocking ring doesn't move with the cocking lever on the bottom.

Is this a common malady? Any ideas where to start?

Thanks,
Scott

FWIW, I've read Chris Sherlock's pages a bit, and while it seems this might be a cocking rack issue (I haven't opened the top yet), the film advance lever works smoothly and positively. The shutter release button does NOT move once the lever is actuated, though.

Okay, here's the cocking rack. Teeth are boogered; is it bad enough to prevent cocking, or could it be serviceable still? I looked on MicroTools and didn't see any more cocking racks - any sources left? I'm afraid I may shafted on this one...

That's it! Thanks, Donnie - couldn't find it.

I am amazed that someone is still selling spare parts for mid 1950s cameras! Is somebody still making them?

I'd *guess* that someone's fabricating them, but I'm not sure. I hope so - it'd be nice if they were of a more robust alloy than the originals...

You can guess how common this problem is in Retinas by the fact that Micro Tools carries the replacement part 55 years down the road. I've also seen accounts of camera modifications to beef up the rack to prevent it flexing back out of mesh under load.
