I have a Nikon E-series 50mm with a strange visible ring in the internal elements. Is this de-lamination? Is this a problem with these lenses? What strikes me as strange is the uniformity of the ring. It looks like a perfect edge, like it belongs there. There is a slight change in color on the inside of this ring, like an film or something.

Never seen something like this before. Could it be some kind of liquid ? |

I was thinking the same thing. As if an oil or something has worked it's way between the elements. The circle is perfectly round, but is slightly off centre. Unfortunately I am having a hard time removing the rear element so I can't get a better look. |

OK, I managed to get the elements apart. It was exactly as we had suspected...oil had penetrated between the two elements and formed a perfect ring. Fortunately, the two elements had an air space between them, they were not cemented. I am now trying to clean the glass and re-assemble. It is surprising how much the oil ring looked like a glass edge...had me fooled. |

I have seen oil penetrating lenses before but in your case it's very unusual that the oil looks so clear. It's often giving a discoloration. Good that you can get rid of it so easily ! |
