I'm learning (on my own) to service some old 16mm Eclair ACL motion picture camera magazines. Yhe hard part is that I don't have a specification on the lubricants. I do have some ideas from another forum where Chuck Colburn gave the lubricants that they used in a generic way on all motion picture cameras. My question is, what are readily available lubes that will serve instead. Here is what Chuck said.

Losoid.
-33B for movement gearing, Arri phenolic pull down claws, most lens rotating and sliuding surfaces.

-BBR-1 for ball bearings, fibre gearing.

- #70 for areas needing heavier lube.

I think those are all greases.
In the meantime, I found some lithium grease at the local bike shop that looks just like the synthetic grease that the pro service tech used 15 years ago on my camera movement. And some nice synthetic oils.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Cheers,
Gregg.
PS: Is Permatex ultra disc brake caliper lube, a synthetic gell usefull for anything. It looked like it might be good for sme small ball bearings and helical gears.

I don't know those products or the specs for motion pibture cameras, but can agree with bike shops as good source of lubricants. There are many good oils and greases in use on bikes that are useful for some camera applications.

Losoid is a tradename used by the former company Losima in Hannover, Germany. Nowadays that company is called Losimol GmbH. They still produce a grease called Losoid 33B from which they write that it can be used on camera helicoids.

Thanks,
I think I have to actually contact Losimol to see what their quantities and prices are.

I pussied out (was too afraid) to email Losimol or Kluber sofar. I settled for visiting a camera technician at Panavision Auckland. He gave me tiny amounts of the lubricants they use for Aaton cameras. If anyone is interested in what they were let me know, when I have time I will type in the data or try scanning the page.

I know only 1 webshop were you can order the excellent Klüber Barrierta L55. Be prepared to pay almost 500 Euro for 200 Grams of it !

Maybe somebody else knows a cheaper place.

You were lucky to find that technician !
