Hello All,
I'm new to this forum. I have repaired / restored an Olympus trip, I have 2 Konica Auto S2's to work on (one for spares) and hoping to get a few more rangefinders. Has anyone given up digital photography for just film alone ?.

I started collecting cameras most from the late 1940 to early 1950 era after I lost my digital point and shoot camera a few years ago. Now I have a collection of Kodak Retina, Rolleicord, medium format folders, and various rangefinder/viewfinder cameras. At first I have purchased my cameras from Ebay but had to stop due to hassles from the vendors miss-representing the camera's condition. Now I find better selections from local second hand stores and local online ads. I have about 15 working classic cameras and more in repair. When I get the cameras I would restore them to operational condition and use them for a while. I have one with me all the time. They are a lot of fun in hunting, fixing, and using them. I still do some digital photography (purchased a DSLR a while back). I am currently using a Kodak Retina IIIc that I purchased a year ago-takes beautiful pictures. |

I have made this point before. Why not buy and sell/exchange between ourselves? Any shady character twisting someone,would get away with it only once. Knowing that, shady types would work their scams somewhere else. |

Has anyone given up digital photography for just film alone ?
Interestingly worded question, and an indication that I must be getting old. I never gave up film for digital photography in the first place. 
I got interested in photography back in the late 60's when I started collecting old cameras, primarily pre-1920 stuff. I started using them to see if they worked, and fell in love with making photographs. Due to the fact that I collect more "antique" stuff than "classic," I often have little to contribute to this group, but check in most every day. A very enjoyable group. |

I think it is hard to completely give up digital for film.
Digital has a lot of advantages over film like being able to view pictures instantly, zero wait time on development, no waiting time on scanning to post up or email & extremely portable with the smaller versions.
Images simply look better on film. I have a Konica T3N that I use just for B/W photography. And I am slowly getting better and better at it. :D
But the most I love about using my Konica is when people see me using a tool that is 35yrs old that looks great and is still fully functional. How many things around you are 35yrs old that you can still use? I find it amazing how such tools can still capture images of your life.
I would never get rid of one for the other. They both have their place in my heart and with unique differences and uses. I guess it would be like asking "Would you give up your pickup truck for your Porsche?" Two similar devices that still take you from point A to point B but with totally different functions. |

Film for when I want to take the time, and digital for when I need it now. I love the advantages of both, and can live with the disadvantages.

I use both. I take digital (FF dSLR) if I need it in color, in volume (either lot of prints/lot of shots), or fast.
I take 35mm film if I need to travel light or fast, I take a Bessa-R if I expect to shoot life (25mm lens...) and Rollei 35SE if it's normal lens I'm after.
I take a Rolleicord or Yashica Mat if I rather expect landscapes, architecture or people at leisure, and only if my travel is slower paced.
The 6x6 TLR is my favourite tool, but at 12 pictures to a roll I never take it if I'm the only photographer within the group. Otherwise social disappointment is built in...
I don't consider my photography an art, but I greatly enjoy taking pictures and I think there are things I'm good at. But it's rather a good carpenter good, than good sculptor good.

I think digital can't give up.
In HongKong where hard to find film anymore.In past we can buy film in store, supermarket.only selling film in develop shop now.
2)Nomore band to choose.Only Fuji Kodak!?
3)Digital cheaper than film.Develop a roll film about 20HK Dollar, each 4R photography $1.1 totally ~$60. In digital $0.6/photography at least 10 .But one 4GB SD with 7.0 Megapixel camera can take a lot of. |

Hi all.
I'm very new to classic cameras, and in answer to the OP, I only use film cameras now, but I process my own B&W film then scan the negs.
Cameras I use are Olympus Trip, Zenit E and EM, Nikon FE and F401s. The Zenit EM and trip are the most fun, the Nikon FE is the most comfortable to use.
I bought my 1st digital back in 1998, big clunky sony, and have had several since. they're brilliant for crystal clear pics, instant and as pointed out cheap to run, but they got no soul.... |

Our numbers are growing!
Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum. Just could not pass by this subject without reacting. I agree with Flybye -- never really gave up film, but did have a few pretty long periods when I did not touch a film camera. Used to develop my own film and print my own prints (B&W - 135) in the old days. Had not done that in ages. Must be over quarter of a century. Having a lab do that for me was so convenient. Then came the digital age. Earlier this year inherited a Yashica Mat 124G. And Nostalgia kicked in big time. Along with an ages old dream to go 'big' -- mid format. So, started to catch up on reading about all this, and buying appropriate equipment. All used, but in good shape. And what I have noticed, is that I am TOO LATE., missed the train... Just 5-6-7 years ago, judging from what I was reading on the 'net, all this (medium format) stuff was literally dumped. Now, just as I happened to start getting into it, the prices have skyrocketed. Old stuff is sold at premium prices. Some things for more than when they were sold new, and this is not only due to inflation. I think that 'serious' amateurs have had enough of the digital stuff, and are turning back to film. But, keeping the digital equipment. I am certainly keeping mine. When I need to shoot some get-together with friends, or kids playing, running around, swimming, etc. I would not think of getting a 6x6 out with a tripod and a hand held light meter, and waste valuable few frames on the 120 film. This one is for something special, like a good portrait, or a s unset, or a flower, etc. Will bet that many of us think the same. |

The prices on medium format have skyrocketed?
Yeah, I see all those Bronica ETRS selling at eBay in the $150. to $190. range. Too rich for us po' folk.
But I agree the film cameras are for serious shooting. |

I have a collection of old cameras. I started with decent cameras in the mid 60's with an Asahiflex 1A — about the only camera I ever owned that I didn't keep. I have a little Canon IXY digital that is about the size of a pack of Luckies. It does all the snap shots and stuff for Email and forums. I can't afford a top flight DSLR, so for more serious shooting it looks like I'll be staying with film. |

I have read meany posts about old film and digital cameras, best of both worlds etc.. I may have some form of solution, especially for FD lens owners. Placing a compact digital camera sensor in the place of the Pentaprism on say a canon F1 (Removeable viewer) could be away of keeping your old lenses in action on a fundtional film SLR! One idea. The other is to build a lens specific body, in my case for FD lenses. CCD manufacturers make what they call "Developer kits" with their CCDs and I have enquired about these to buy. If I can get a full size CCD and set in place at the right focal length, all my FD lenses become active again, and I don't mind making more than one if it works, for the right price of course. I would be machining bodies out of aluminium billets and may make a sliging adaptor to use with other makes of lenses. Starting with FD first though, as that is my stockpile of lenses. The CCD I am thinking of is called FTF3060C Teledyne Dalsa FTF3060C and can be supplied in a Developers kit. The kit could easily fit into a compact body but may not be the ultimate solution.. Will be looking into the Sony web site for their CCD developer kits if they exist. |

My answer to the OP's question, I used film from 1968 to 2010 when my wife bought me a digital slr. Now digital is mainly color for me, but for black and white its 35 and 120 developed by me. I have a small dry darkroom for printing. My favorite cameras are TLR's for 120 and for 35mm slrs and rangefinders from the 50's.

I want to tell you my family story. I like to eat fish very much, but my wife never eats fish, she hates it. So meals in my family usually exist of meat and fish. In the meal I ate fish and meat too, and my wife asks, why did you say that you like to eat fish very much?
Yes, the answer is the same in here. I like film photography very much, and I like digital photograph ….very much too. Am I ambitious?
For film I use Canonet, Canon AE-1P, for digital I use Olympus FE-4020, Canon T4i. |

Talking real digital cameras and not cell phones, I think the main advantages of digital are, *much* higher low-light sensitivity, and the ability to store a gazillion images on the camera before having to download them somewhere. Reloading film is rarely that big a deal, but if I were a professional shooting a wedding, say, I'd probably care. Light sensitivity is just what it is, so digital wins hands-down in some (probably rare for most people) circumstances, like taking dark-sky pictures of the milky way, or catching shooting stars. For everything else, I augment my film camera gear with two items that give me the best of both worlds; a cell phone camera for snapshots and instant post-to-facebook stuff, and a good flatbed scanner. I've never had the slightest interest in buying a DSLR, for all kinds of reasons that would be time-consuming to explain but that I bet most people here can relate to without me trying to explain. ;-) |
