I received a exa 500 from a friend. I can not get the camera to cock. Does it have to have film in it to cock or is there a mechanical problem?

Mechanically it looks more or less identical to my Exa Ia, in which case no, you don't need film. The shutter release is on the front by your left finger, mounted to the lens - if you wind the advance lever, it should fire. |

The advance lever won't move. Can this be fixed by taking off the top cover? |

Hello. Answer to your question - possibly. Then again possibly not. Frankly these cameras are near to the two-a-penny status as you can get. If you really want a working one, you are better off going to some boot sales or charity shops where you will eventually find a working example for a fiver or so. |

To release the jammed lever you must release the ratchet pawl once the top cover is removed.
Unscrew the pawl pivot screw part way then lift the pawl up to free it.
There is more information on this problem if you use SEARCH.
