I have a well used example of this camera which seems to be operating fine except for a rather annoying "twang" sound after the shutter fires. Is it normal to have this "springy" sound in this camera? If anyone can have a listen to theirs and let me know, it would be appreciated. |

Well, the Topcon mirror can be somewhat on the "twing" side, sound-wise. But it is a lot worse when the mirror damper foam is kaput. The mirror should stop before it hits the plate of metal in front of the focusing screen. |

I've replaced the mirror foam already. Most of the noise comes at the end of the shutter sequence, when the mirror flips down. |

I can only draw on my own experience of Topcon, a Wink-S which was my very first slr. Apart from anything else about it, I am sure the sound of the mirror flipping could be heard a hundred yards away if the wind was in the right direction. As a penurious newly-wed I was forced to part with it. Later I acquired another one which also had a mighty thud. Perhaps there is 'something' about Topcon mirror operation? |

I guess what is bothering me the most is not the loudness of the shutter, but the twangy, springy, tinny noise that trails off after the shutter sound. I had another listen yesterday and discovered that the springy noise is even apparent when the film advance lever is operated (when it reaches it's limit of travel). It's as though there is a spring somewhere inside that needs to be dampened. Of course, all of this may be perfectly normal, but I have nothing to compare it to. I had a Canon FTb that had a similar springy sound. |
