I picked up a really nice looking Kowa SET R2 last weekend - but it has a few issues.

Issue 1 - The film advance lever was stuck all the way out. Perhaps ill-advisedly I forced it back to the cocked position and it the shutter fired. So, the problem is simply that the advance lever is VERY stiff.

Issue 2 - If I press the shutter release with the lens removed, everything seems to work just fine. The speeds (at least the lower ones that I can roughly time) are accurate, and the mirror is snappy. If I mount the lens, however, there is a long delay (2-3 seconds) between when the mirror flips up, and when the shutter fires. Any thoughts on this?

I should mention that the front rim of the lens is dented. It looks like someone dropped the camera from a few feet on to a hard surface. Focusing, etc is smooth and the lens glass is fine...but I'd have to guess that this dent and my two problems are related.

Thanks!

Issue 1 -- As you now know, NEVER force any part of a camera's controls. It sounds as if the wind mechanism has now been damaged.

Issue 2 -- The lens diaphragm is dirty and needs cleaning. Probably it has oil on the blades.

The shutter could not complete its cycle because the sticky diaphragm would not close all way, but you forced the wind lever back to the ready condition.

Rick Oleson has some repair notes on the Kowa SLRs and lenses, with which I find them quite easy to work on. You might try emailing him for help.

The lens filter ring almost certainly has nothing to do with either of the first two issues.

So I took the top and bottom covers off. The coil spring around the rewind spool under the bottom cover was completely gummed up. Removed and soaked in lighter fluid. Crisp and smooth now.

A new (perhaps old) problem has come up. No matter what aperture I set the lens to, it always stops down to what I'd guess is f11 or f16. It's a 1.8 lens....anyone know why it would do this? I can slide what appears to be the aperture ring on the back of lens, and it is smooth and free until it opens up about half way, then it won't move any further. Doesn't feel like gummed up oil, feels like it caught on something. Anybody have lens disassembly notes?
