Hi All,

I'm new at this so my apologies if this is a dumb question! Just had a Zenit E arrive via a well known auction site - thought that getting a cheap SLR would be a good way to 'learn' about photography basics.

Problem is the shutter curtain seems to be completely stuck. Regardless of the speed (even B) the shutter curtain doesn't open at all. When I looked at a couple of YouTube videos, winding on the film seems to move the shutter speed dial - but that isn't happening other than a very small jolt.

I'm guessing this may be a lesson learned in buying second hand online, but if there are any ideas on cleaning/freeing this mechanism I'd much appreciate it.

I would try to open the camera and see if there is something stuck or loose there. I had a similar problem with my yashica and there is probably something inside but moving the camera the problem solved by itself.(I need a tool with 2 pin(spanner?) to open the camera)
Did the seller said it was broken? You can still have your money back if you tell the site the description is not what you received

This might be of help. You may be lucky and it is just a matter of a "lazy" curtain.

Hi Guys - thanks for the input it's much appreciated.

I don't think it's the same issue as on the Lomo link. My shutter curtain won't even move - never mind get stuck half way!

Basically, if you look at this video (1m20s in) you'll see when he pulls back the winder, the shutter speed dial moves with it. Mine doesn't do that!

I've had a look under the hood and can't see anything obvious - not that I'd recognize it anyway.

I should be able to return it as it was listed as being 'in working order'. If the shutter doesn't open - I reckon that's not in working order..
Does that sound reasonable?

Yes, it is certainly not in working order.

return it, definitely. Looks complicated to fix but I am not an expert.
