I am looking for and advice for dealing with a particularly stubborn seized helicoid. I was able to strip away the rest of the rest of the lens - luckily it avails itself to this type of disassembly and tried to deal with it by prolonged soaking in, naphtha and then in WD-40, but it simply won't budge. Lubricant residue on the exposed part looked like a yellow crust and I assume there's more of it in the threads. What's my next best bet? Should I try harsher solvents? Try to warm it up in the oven? Anything else? |

Naphtha and WD40 aren't strong enough. Try Xylol (xylene)... this is what worked on my PaX (even then it took days of soaking) |

Thanks for all the advice. I found the "Pax thread", that actually was 4 years ago it was most educational. Sure enough hair dryer did not do a thing, so it's solvent department now. |

I don't think I've had one that stuck, but my Mercury II was seized pretty solidly at first. I ran some lighter fluid in, and then began working the helicoid back and forth over and over. I find that with a lot of seizures in one application or another, it's important not just to try wrenching the thing loose, but to wiggle it back and forth a ridiculous number of times. Once you get even the tiniest hint of movement, you have essentially won the battle, and if you keep it up, you'll finish it without damage, but it can take a very long time. |

You can get xylene as NC [nitro cellulose] thinner in the paint shop. Also as carburetor [engine tune up] cleaner in the automobile shop. Both contain a lot of xylene. It strips the gummy residue even from petroleum products. |

It's also very nasty on paints and plastics, so use it carefully...... |

Getting xylene is not going to be a problem, local hardware store sells quart cans, but I may just have to wait a month or two - until I'll be able to deal with it in the backyard. Or start with acetone. In the meanwhile I will need to reassemble mount which came to me missing every single screw. |

Acetone did not work for me - nor did naphtha or 99% alcohol. But there's no harm in trying, your gluebricant may be different from my PaX. |

Yay! After 24 hours of soaking it in acetone I broke through! With a tiny bit of luck I'll have a working lens tomorrow. |

Thanks, Rick! I spent most my day collecting screws, filing the to size and fashioning plastic washers, but in the end I did it. Tomorrow I'll take it apart again - focus feels too stiff to my taste. |
