Hi fellow lens tinkerers, I need advice for a Leica Summicron 50 Ver. III, from 1976. It suffers from gumming up of the focusing grease. I've tried to flush the old stuff out with lighter naphta and other chemicals, but every time these solvents have evaporated, the stiff focus is back again. So, I tried to dismantle the olde guy. I removed the lens/aperture block which unscrews counter-clockwise without problems. I removed the bayonett mount which is simply held by 5 screws. But I couldn't find out the next step. There is no dented ring anywhere to screw out with a spanner, only two small grub screws in the outer focusing barrel. But removing them doesn't help. The barrel holds firm to the outer focusing thread as if it was welded. I'm a bit shy to use brute force at this point. To make things more complicated, the lens uses a double thread for 1) focusing the lens block and 2) leading the rangefinder barrel which turns half a circle from infinity to .7 meters and is obviously hand-machined down to give the exact position at every point in between. Has anybody ever worked his or her way through this lens and could give me a hint? I've done quite complicated repairs, but this wonder of german precision seems to master me ... Thanks in advance, Robert |
