.....80 to 210 zoom. It's backwards. That is, it zooms out to 80, then back in to 210,...and the lens barrel length stays the same. Rather odd set up. I've never seen that before. It seems like a nice lens. I hear a strange rattly noise when I shake it a bit, like a spring rattling around inside, but it seems to work just fine.
Anyone have any experience with Komura lenses?

Try holding the stop down lever and shake. It might be it doing the noise and that is normal. Don

I think it's just a race full of ball bearings inside, like the kind seen in extension tubes. The lens seems to be a fine lens.

It's not all that uncommon for lens bearings to rattle. At one time, I disassembled a 28-210mm Kiron to see what the noise was all about. Turned out that the rear race simply wasn't full. The gap allowed the bearings to rattle if the lens was shaken.

I have a Komuranon (Komura) 500mm f/7 lens in Nikon F mount. It's single-coated, manual-everything, but razor sharp. Can't speak directly to the zooms, but Komura glass has a very good reputation. Unfortunately, they got out of the 35mm biz early on, so there's not a lot to choose from.
