I recently bought an FT-3 with a known meter problem. The problem remained after cleaning the battery compartment so I assumed that the source of the fault would be in the resistor and wipers under the mounting flange. This solution is very well described in Tomosy's Nikon book, however I was very reluctant to go down that path as retaining the flatness of the mounting flange is a worry. Instead I removed the top plate to get access to the main switch and discovered a pinched wire that leads to the winder arm actuated contact. So save yourself a lot of work and check that switch before messing with the wiper arms.

Incidentally, there is still an issue with the camera as the mirror lock lever (assuming that's what it is) just above the lens release button, is stuck. Any ideas on how to release it?
The mirror operates normally on shutter release.
