Has anyone repainted a telephoto lens? I have an old 600mm lens that is in depserate need of new paint - the optics and action is fine it just looks like it went through a battle.

I repaint a variety of cameras and equipment and most of the time use Rustoleum because it flows and covers well, but it takes a long time to dry. For small areas, I use a touch-up brush. For larger areas, I use an air brush or a spray can. The spray can is convenient but doesn't always produce a good finish.

Very careful masking and cleaning is important. A lens - other than touch up - is hard because you have to disassemble it to do a first-class job.

If you use bulk paint out of a can, you can mix several glosses to get the one you need. You can do that with spray cans for touch up by spraying proportionate amounts of two glosses into a small container and mixing them. If the gloss out of a single spray can is O.K., I often spray paint onto the tip of a small brush then do touch up with the brush.

No matter what, it takes a lot of time to do it right. - Malcolm
