hi,
can anybody explane how to relate the
the numbers around the lens barrel
to the camera settings when using
a pro tessar.

Hi:

I don't have the Pro-Tessars, but my understanding of how they work is that you set the focus on the camera body/shutter to infinity and then use the barrel of the Pro-Tessar to focus. The aperture setting on the shutter should be good, except that you can't use aperture values beyond the maximum aperture of the Pro-Tessar (ie, don't set it at 2.8)

Hi,Rick.
Thanks for the reply.
The pro tessars do not focus,you use the camera
to focus.The only thing that rotates is a distance
ring on the rear of the lens, and it was the numbers on this that I was querying,because I
can't see how they relate to the distace ring on the camera.

It's just the depth of field scale. Because the focus ring is shared by all focal lengths, the scale cannot be on it, but must be on the interchangeable part. It isn't coupled, so if you need DOF information, you must turn it to match the focus setting.
