I have some leads on what I think are very good condition Canon AE-1 Program cameras. For those of you familiar with them please give me some advice before I buy (auction going on now).
Here is what I want to do: I want to use the camera for low light landscapes, and full light macro. I want to find what I used to have -- a very bright focusing screen, manual focus, aperture priority capable camera. Not looking for a collector piece -just want to set the clock back to the 80's when I first got started in photography.
I want a camera that is well supported. It is either this or a Nikon FM I think. The Canon I believe is easier on the wallet.
What do you all think. The AE-1 Program a good choice? |

I don't think that an AE-1 program is what you're looking for.
First of all, the AE-1 and AE-1P are both shutter priority only, not aperture priority.
Second of all, the AE-1 eats batteries in long exposures. Also, if the battery dies, the camera dies.
AE-1P screens are fairly bright, although not up to the level of the T90 or F-1N.
I think that given your requirements, you might be better off with either version of the F-1. Neither is too terribly expensive these days. I paid $99 for my old-style F-1, and upgraded the focusing screen to one of the bright laser-matte types for $15.
The F-1N has aperture priority(the old F-1 is manual only), plus the focusing screens are all really bright. You should be able to get one for $150. |
