I've got the aperture blades back in position and working correctly.
I've been using Daniel Mitchell's excellent site as a reference

Putting back the shutter blades is easy. However, when I prime the shutter, the actuating ring moves counterclockwise and back again fully opening the blades and then closing them. Indeed, I can't see that it can do otherwise. I was expecting that the blades would stay shut until the shutter is fired.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help so far.

Look at the picture below (actually a Retinette IIb). The spring I have arrowed hooks around the end of one of the screws you have to take out from the back of the shutter when you dismantle it. If this is not in place it causes the symptom you describe. The other end of the spring should engage with a pin on the shutter ring.

This is excellent information, I really couldn't have wished for better. Thanks.
