Does anyone have some advise on restoring lenses with a ding on the filter ring? Do the lens vice work? I've seen these being sold on eBay. I've also seen the Wooden blocks with a radius cut in them, do they help? I thought I'd get some advice before trying it on one of my lenses.

An insignificent filter devoid of glass, cut in half, provides protection when you tap the ding out. Needs care! I use a hardwood block to rest the lens on. I suppose a chipwood block would do as well. Good luck!

I personally use a set of lens vices. However these have been much modified, by removing excess metal from the jaws - this gives better clearance to the front element, if needed.

You should note that some of the vices available on eBay are rather crude. I have seen a couple of examples, where the mating thread on the jaws was cut to the wrong pitch. The one that was used removed the ding, but completely ruined the filter thread in two locations.
