I have stripped down a Zeiss Pancolar (f2, zebra-striped, Exakta mount) for de-fungusing. The diaphragm was sticky, so I have stripped this too.
The rotating part of the diaphragm mechanism runs in a ball-race (3 widely spaced caged balls) which is something I have not met before. Should this bearing be dry, or should it be lubricated? I'd assume that the oil/grease on the diaphragm blades must originally have come from here. If it should be oiled, presumably a trace of watch-oil would do it? |

Dry. The oil on the blades would have come from the focusing helical. |

Thanks, Rick. I had thought it was too far from the helical to the diaphragm for the oil to have migrated from there, but I've just slotted the parts back together, and it is much closer than I thought. The helical is very stiff, so the oil must have gone somewhere! |
