I bought a mint 70-210mm Series E Nikon lens on eBay for $11, knowing that it had a loose mount. After I fiddled a bit, I discovered that the screws that fix the mount are under the sleeve that covers the lens barrel...but not until I had first explored under the chrome lens mount itself.

After I re-assembled everything, I discovered that I had "lost" the detents for the aperature ring. I took it apart, and darned if I can figure out how it might have detented before -- I can find nothing to engage the bumps on the aperature ring.

Any ideas?

If you look closely you'll probably find a hole about 1mm in diameter in the barrel under or adjacent to the aperture ring. There probably is a spring down in this hole, and there used to be a 1mm diameter steel ball on top of the spring. It's probably gone now.
