So, here is my dilemma... I'm short on cash and I primarily shoot Nikon MF. I have been eyeing the Nikkor 25-50mm zoom to use as an all around landscape/urban lens, but I will have to sacrifice my Nikkor AI 28mm f/2 lens to obtain the zoom. The f/2 would subsequently be replaced by the much more affordable, however much slower, AI 28mm f/2.8 lens. Would anyone be able to offer an educated comparison of these two lenses? Would I just be sacrificing the speed, or would I also be losing sharpness and image quality?

Even though the nikkor zoom is good the fixed 28 would do you better on sharpness, You would have to blow up the image quite a bit to see the difference. Don

Don,

Thank you for your input, but I was more so hoping for a comparison of the 28 f/2 and the 28 f/2.8 lenses.

Best,

N.

Cautionary note here, that I own neither of the lenses mentioned, but according to what I've read, the 2.8 is nice and sharp close up, but not as good as the 2.0 at distance.

Here's Bjorn Rorslett's take on them:

http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_wide.html

On the other hand, according the Ken Rockewell, the 28/2.8 AIS is the sharpest there is:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28f28ais.htm

Maybe Rockwell didn't look as closely at the corners as Rorslett did? Anyway, it seems that the 2.8 is very sharp in at least part of its range. If you go to both those sites and look up your current lens as well, you'll get at least some idea of how those two reviewers compare the two.

Adding to the above, here's another set of evaluations, more or less agreeing along the same lines as Rorslett's:

Note that in the post above the outstanding 2.8 was the AIS, not the earlier AI, more or less unchanged from the older versions, which everyone seems to agree is a mediocre performer at best.
