Hi

I bought a very nice looking black dial Contax IIa with 50/1.5 coated sonnar for 35 dollars!

Now the bad part: The shutter is stuck. Worse, the shutter curtain moves sideways when I touch lightly with fingers. Does this mean the ribbons are broken? Is there a relatively easy way to tell what is wrong with the shutter? If the ribbons need replacement I cannot repair it myself. Do you have a suggestion on whom I should send it for CLA? (Europe or USA both ok) I do not want to send it to zeisscamera.com due to the excessive turnaround time.

The lens is ok except for a dark mark in one of the inner elements that is visible only when viewed from a certain angle. I will test it with film before I try cleaning it. The front and rear elements are spotless.

Ribbon problems are not common in postwar Contaxes, and not a routine job to replace as they are in the II and III. Here are some notes on the IIa shutter:

Your lens sounds like it may have separation, which is common in the "Carl Zeiss" (not the "Zeiss-Opton") series of postwar lenses. I might offer a suggestion for that, but Henry Scherer would have me burned in effigy on the town square.

The lens is a Zeiss Opton so I am hoping it is not separation.

In Kiev IV it was possible to remove the film rail and see the shutter mechanism without any further disassembly. How do I do the same on the Contax IIa to verify I have a broken shutter?

(ps: That's exactly the same price that I paid for each of 3 Contax rangefinders: a II, a IIa and a III)
