I would like to purchase a cable release for my 1973 Canon EF but I'm not sure what to get. Any help?

Any 'Prontor' fitting cable release will fit the EF. This is the standard, good old fashioned cable release, that has been available since the German makers of the Prontor shutter invented/released it in 1908.

The only radically different cable release fitting, is the one used on the early Leica cameras - perhaps Leitz did not want to pay a license fee to use the Prontor fitting at the time.

You want to purchase the most flexible cable release you can. There are a number of 'heavy duty' metal and plastic armoured releases available, which if not long enough can transmit movement to a tripod mounted camera. Ideally these armoured releases should be at least 600mm/2ft long, never purchase one that is 300mm/1ft long or less. Your best bet is the standard fabric covered variety, which has been used for years.
