This is on a Contax RTSii with a horizontal cloth (actually titanium) shutter. The brake assembly and rotation limiter has had some grease smothered all over it. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me but I'm not sure. I never lubricate them and I've never seen grease on them previously but I wondered what the general opinion was.

So no comments from anyone but I eventually answered my own question and the answer is, don't ever put grease on this type of curtain brake, it causes no end of problems. This shutter only stared to work properly after I cleaned it all off.

I don't know what it was. Looked like a fairly light grease to me. It certainly wasn't damping anything. But it stopped the brake from doing what it was designed to do.

Makes good sense for brake mechanics. Grease does more harm than good for stopping.

From the looks of things it had to be some hack that thinks everything you can get to needs to be lubed. That stuff is all over the place.

It can be necessary in some cameras. In the Pentacon Six, the anti bounce brake can stop the curtains short and prevent the flash from firing. Generally I’m not fond of oil and grease but some designs need a bit.
