Having just obtained a tidy Vitomatic IIA I find the split-image rangefinder useless, in that the second image is invisible under normal light conditions. At night, I can detect the image from a bright light, and can confirm that it moves correctly and in alignment. What can be done to brighten up this image?

You could mask the area of the finder where the second image is visible, like so:
