I recently obtained a Telex accessory rangefinder and I'm in the process of cleaning it. In the interior there appears to be a small piece of black paper that partially covers both openings, this paper appears to be very fragile and worn and somewhat thin in appearence. Does anyone know what type of material this can be replace with and if so, does that material have to conform to any standard or is it simply a piece of material to partially block each opening. Any feed back would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with this device, but have worked on lots of other rangefinders. Since the black paper or tape merely functions as a light block, it's not critical what material is used; some cameras simply use black paint schmeared over the window. If you can get it open, you can replace it with any suitable opaque material.

The critical part is to block the correct amount of the light path, to create two images, one fixed, the other movable.

As you said, it is simply a piece of material. Replace it with anything that works/fits.
