I found a nice Vivitar V335 at a thrift store but it has a cracked top cover (cracked at the pentaprism). Will this throw off the exposure or allow light into the camera and how easy/hard is it to remove/replace the top cover? Thanks.

Cracks in plastic SLR covers are seldom serious problems. If the meter checks out against a known good camera, don't worry about it. There is no way light from the top cover can get into the mirror box to spoil the exposure.

Because the crack is evidence of impact damage, you should check the focusing accuracy by taking pictures at infinity and close distances. There is a small possibility that the mirror may have been knocked out of alignment.
