I have a Retina Reflex S lens, a Xenon 50mm f1.9 that is optically excellent and has a smooth aperture, but the focus is screechy. I'd like to disassemble it and grease the focusing helical, but I haven't been able to find any info on this procedure.

Does anyone have any experience on this topic?

Thanks

G'day Don,

Unscrew the the black conical centre ring around the front lens group using a friction tool. Lift off the name ring/filter mount. Remove the four screws and washers visible. Lift the lens barrel out of the mount.

Most likely you will discover the problem isn't with the lens helical at all, but with the base of the focus mount instead. Dismantling of that is done from the rear.

Remove the four screws, lift off the back of the mount. Record the details of the positions of the depth-of-field indicators, springs and spacers before removing them. Underneath all this you will find two brass crescent shaped brackets holding the focus ring in place, remove the brackets and separate the parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble....easy!

Regards, Chris
