First, the picture:

So, I was trying to load the film and realized that the take up spool (marked with red) turns both directions. As a result, I'm unable to load the film properly. The rewind release pin isn't pressed. I tried removing the top of the camera, but didn't know what to do next. I don't know what mechanism is used for keeping the take up spool from turning both directions.

Any ideas?

The take-up spool turns both ways with resistance in every camera I tested in my possession, even after the shutter is fired. This is expected. If it's freely moving in either direction or not turning while being wound it may be a clutch or gear train problem. Sorry I'm not familiar with that camera to help further.
