I'm not sure what the exact problem is, but the spring in the lever mechanism is pretty difficult to re-install. I have done it a few times, but it can be very frustrating. If the spring is not installed correctly, it could be the cause of your problems.
I recall using a long piece of elastic band to hold the spring in place while installing the lever. The elastic was then drawn out and the lever secured.

There is a repair CD on ebay for very little money that will answer your questions. It is well worth the money for any Bessamatic owner. It also contains the user manual.Ron G
