Hi everyone,

yesterday the focusing ring on my favorite lens the Asahi Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50 1.4 M42 got stuck. The focus ring now only moves a fraction of its original focus throw. Is there a way I can fix it?
I would really apprechiate you help!

Kind regards
Tim

T: You would have to remove the lens ID ring first & see if you could get access to the helicoid thread to put a very few & light drops of oil, but this would only be a temporary fix & could start other problems that would get oil onto the aperture leafs (not good). Best bet if not familiar with lens workings would be send it out for a complete rebuild & fresh lube.

Normally this happens because one of two sets of screws is not tightened down evenly. Remove the name ID ring and loosen the three screws behind it. See if it will focus now with the screws loose. More likely, it's the next set of screws that hold the focus ring to the focus helicoid. They are held in place with a small brass washer and if one gets a little loose the other 2 can pull unevenly causing the barrel to rub against the focus ring. Normally, just tightening these two sets of screws will fix the problem. It's not likely to be the helicoid grease. Pentax used a very nice grease and I rarely ever see a M42 mount pentax where the grease has broken down.

Another thing it could be: sometimes the thin aluminum strip that has the distance scale on it can become detached from the barrel (it is only glued on) and jam the focus mechanism or cause a grinding sound.

Take a close look at the distance scale and make sure it is seated correctly. If it is loose, the lens will have to be disassembled so you can glue the strip back on.
