Took this camera on as a challenge project, to see if it's as difficult as some say it is. In some respects it is, but then a lot of it is just common sense, especially when going in without any guidance. It's not my best performance so far, but then with the condition of the camera being as it is, I didn't really expect to get it back in working order.

There were a few surprises along the way, but it's working again. Wish I'd had a better looking piece to start with, and might one day turn it into a 'Black Body' conversion. That is, if it doesn't fall apart on me. I still need to run a test roll through it.

You know, I'm wondering if this isn't the Karat 36 I had in 1988 that I sold at the county swap meet. It was really worn out but it still worked.

If it was, Finnegan, it made it's way to Roanoke, VA. Here are some photos I took with it today http://flic.kr/s/aHsjztApbT

Unfortunately, I flipped the rear elements by mistake, so I'll have to shoot another roll.

Update 4-13-12: Turns out it wasn't the rear group that was flipped, but the second element, which is in the front lens housing. I was more careful this time about checking the focus at the film plane, and think I've got everything back in place.

In a Tessar design, the rearmost element surface is nicely convex, with the face of it's cemented partner being almost flat, or somewhat concave. That, and the fungus tracings left from a previous cleaning (which would normally be on an inner suface), led me to believe I had put it back together correctly in the first place. I just didn't check the focus correctly, ignoring the outer areas of the image. We'll see how the second test roll comes out.
