Just received a Contax 137 MD. With new batteries, the battery check shows green. When I switch it "on" the main lamp flashes red continuously. Won't load film, shutter won't fire.

Suggestions? Is is possible the camera thinks it has film that needs to be rewound? If so, where is the switch or sensor that's stuck?

That's usually an indication of a motor problem or a jam somewhere.

I'd try rocking the film wind sprocket a bit to see if that solves it.

When the camera has wound the film to the end of the roll, it sets the flashing signal you see until the switch is reset during the rewind process. Power is shut off to the motor. There are probably some other conditions which set the signal- I can't remember any specifically right now but they relate to motor or shutter cycle problems.

Thanks, Michael. Rocking the film wind sprocket and take-up spool on one occasion (out of many) did clear the problem and allow the camera to fire a couple of times. So, this shows you are on the mark.

Alas, after firing a couple of times, then it's back to flashing red, and the same cure has no effect.
