I have a thrift store Yashica T2 that, when new film is loaded, goes into rewind mode. Pressing the manual rewind button (to see if something "frees up") does not help. Any thoughts?

Look for another one. This is most likely an electronic fault. I went through three Canon Sure Shot Classic 120's before I got one that worked correctly. One of them wouldn't load the film unless you popped the back open for a split second. And then after removing the rewound cannister, it would go through the film load cycle. Very disconcerting.
