I purchased this Electro 35 off of ebay. Other than the shutter issue, the camera seems fine.
I don't have a battery in it, but when I wind it and shoot, the blades at first weren't opening. I used rubbing alcohol to clean them some and will get some lighter fluid to follow up. I can tell that behind the blades, there is some gumming that's started to come out. I'm not comfortable taking it apart much more than I already have. Who can I send it to for repair?

If anyone here has problems with the "Pad of Death" in the Electro 35, please note: the seal kit I sell for the Electro 35 has for over a year included both the pad of death and the dust seal (goes around the rewind shaft collar). It also includes simplified instructions on replacing the pad. Simplified defined as "you don't have to remove the shutter / lens assembly or anything like that." Essentially if you can remove the top plate (and instructions are included) and if you are patient and able to follow instructions, you'll be ok. And the price of the kit didn't change...still $10 delivered in the USA or $10.10 delivered elsewhere. If you only want the instructions, please send an email ([email protected]) and I'll gladly send them.

I think I'd use contact cement and guide the new one in very carefully. If this makes you nervous, I'd see if I could find some DUCO household cement...the kind marked highly flammable (and in a green tube). It dries slowly, but it holds ok. The pad I include with the kit is backed with a high grade pressure-sensitive adhesive and if you clean the spot where it mounts very well, it should be there for decades. It was made from some specialized 1mm foam I had (for another purpose). That foam laminated nicely into a 2mm pad. If you decide to make a pad, I'd try to get it as close to 2mm thick as possible and choose something that is firm but not rock hard. It needs a bit of give.
When I replace the pad, I go in from the top. If anyone out there just needs the pad, please send me an email. I'll give you my address and you can mail me a self-addressed and stamped envelope. I'll be happy to send one.

Good info, Jon. Thanks! The adhesive-backed pad would be a lot easier to install. I've managed to get glue several places in an Electro 35 where it shouldn't be, but in the effort to do a cleaner job I've learned to get in and out through the front fairly efficiently. |
