Thanks to a tip from a couple of you on here I found the Xenon strobe tubes to repair my 3 burned out Canolite D's . It was not exactly a drop in bulb change but I did get them up and Flashing!
The tubes from Electronics Goldmine ( 1.79 each) are about .350 of an inch longer than the Canon and a bit thinner in diameter. There is little room to spare inside the Flash unit, but by mounting the strobe tube on a diagonal thru the reflector and repositioning a couple of parts inside the housing , it can be done . If there is any interest for a show and tell , I have pictures of the operation I can post , IF anyone wants them.
As I said I had 3 faulty flashes , the first one took a while, but after I engineered the modification the rest took about 25 minutes each.
