hello,
i posted earlier but could not find my post so please forgive me if there are multiples. i am trying to remove the top covers on the electronic/mechanical f1 and cant figure out how to remove the "r" button on the wind side of the camera...does it lift off or screw of? how does one remove the asa dial?

Hello

The "r" is fixed to the top and comes off with the top, so no need to remove it.
The ASA dial has a small plastic insert in the top that has to be removed to get to the release screw, it is difficult to remove this without marking it.A small needle helps.

Also the small collar around the shutter release button must be unscrewed. Due to corrosion this is sometimes difficult to remove. Don't use pliars, you will surely mark it, us a small rubber washer or pad.
Be careful when lifting off the release button, there is a small spring and detent ball just waiting to get lost!
