I've just received a beautiful Werra 1. I cocked and fired the shutter a few time and it functioned beautifully. I noticed that one of the two small plastic tabs that act as finger grips on the shutter speed setting ring seemed a little loose, but foolishly cocked and fired the shutter a couple more times. Then, the shutter/wind jammed with the cocking ring in the fully-wound position, and I noticed that the little plastic tab was missing. I suspect that the tab has slipped down into the interior of the lens assembly and is caught in the mechanism. Another possibility is that in my attempts to loosen things I may have pushed the shutter release while the shutter is half-cocked, apparently another way of jamming the action. Is there any advice out there as to how I should proceed with an attempt to remedy this situation? The camera is pretty much "as new" and I'd love to get it up and running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I haven't dealt with them very much. I do know that if you remove the 4 screws that hold the film gate in place and then unscrew the retaining ring around the back end, the shutter will lift off from the front. With luck, at that point maybe the plastic piece will fall out of the works and you can put it back together. |

Thanks, Rick, I'll give that a try in the light of day, tomorrow. Most opinions I've read suggest that the shutter itself is very tricky item to delve into. |

Mission accomplished. The lens/shutter assembly came off very neatly as a compact unit, no springs leaping about or linkages falling on the floor. The camera is certainly very nicely-engineered. The errant tab was wedged up in the film transport mechanism at the top of the camera, and it's now back on the speed ring, waiting for a drop of epoxy resin to dry. For future reference, the four screws in the film gate mere allow the gate to be removed for better access with a spanner wrench to loosen the retaining ring around the lens. As well as the ring, there are four small screws surrounding the rear of the lens that penetrate the front face of the camera and screw into the rear of the shutter unit. Obviously, these must also be removed. The camera is a Werra 1E. |
