I have a Zorki 4 that the 1/30 second setting works like B. There are a lot of CLA instructions out there, but none that I have found address this issue. Any suggestions where to look or what to do? |

On the shutter speed stack at the very bottom is a lever which controls the second shutter it could be gummed up. It ties to the second shutter drum directly see if it is free. To get at it you remove top cover , tension the shutter and see if it will move. You probably checked for film chips in the shutter gears on the bottom of the chassis. But it never hurts to check. Make sure you have done all the cla first then if it is still inoperative check the shutter tension especially on the closing curtain . I had a zorki with just the opposite problem and it was the spring lever had a worn tooth, I filed it straight and that fixed it. |

On the Zorki 1/30 is actually the slowest of the 'fast' speeds (1/60 is the first of the 'slow' speeds -- a foible of how the shutter speeds mechanism is put together), that's why it's positioned beyond B on the shutter speeds dial.
When you release the shutter, a milled brass wheel spins around (beneath the top cover) and releases first one then the other curtain. When you select say, 1/125, the dial travels further than when 1/30 is selected and consequently has more momentum.
What's happening is that when this milled disc spins from the 1/30 position it doesn't have enough 'ooomph' to release the second curtain.
The cure? A shutter CLA. Cleaning and oiling the shutter release mechanism, cleaning and lubing the curtain drum gears and oiling (sparingly) the curtain clutches (all of which is documented elsewhere on the web).
Don't be tempted to tension the curtains. It MAY appear to cure the problem but it won't last long.
