When shoooting with various lenses on a AE-1 Program, I've noticed that several times, when the shutter button is depressed to take a picture, the viewfinder image becomes darker, like the mirror moved a bit, yet the shutter doesn't open all the way to snap the picture. When I slide the stop down lever in, the picture fires, and the shutter opens and resets. Also, when the shutter button is depressed, and this happens, when the lens is removed, the shutter fires exposing the film. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

It sounds like your lens diaphragm has gotten so sticky that it blocks the shutter from firing. Do you have another lens to try on the camera?

I have notes for cleaning the diaphragms in the 50mm lenses; if it's a zoom it may be more difficult. I don't know if you're in the mood for a DIY project, it would not be terribly expensive to have this done professionally (or for that matter, to replace the lens, probably)
